T34 - From your records… The Taxman’s latest unsolicited letter suggests that you might be paying too much tax, and to contact him without delay. What’s he up to now? Latest ruse. It’s unsolicited brown envelope time again. This one contains a letter from the head of your area tax office which starts with “From my records…” Immediately you think “what does he know?”. Read on… He says you could be paying too much or not enough tax (more like his usual attitude). He then tries to catch your interest with some pretty common circumstances when this can occur. Too much. He suggests you could be paying too much tax if you are: paying into a personal pension plan or making charitable payments. Too little. But you could owe tax if you receive: income from your savings, such as bank or building society interest, or company dividends; letting property that you own or if you have some self-employed income. Too late. If any of these apply to you, you are told to contact him as soon as possible. However, the letter completely ignores the fact that you may already be completing a tax return! Standard letters aimed at higher rate taxpayers who are not subject to self-assessment have apparently been sent to many people who are. The Taxman got it wrong in selecting addresses for his mailshot. Tip 1. If you already submit a tax return and receive such correspondence ring up the area office (the contact number should be on the letter) and tell them. You’ll need to quote your NI number (again this should be on the letter) and some personal details in order for the tax office personnel to access your records to confirm this. They should then tell you to ignore the letter as it’s been sent in error! Tip 2. If you don’t fill in a tax return, don’t panic. Printed on the back of this letter is a list of the reasons why he needs tax returns from people. As if we hadn’t worked it out already! However, if you’ve already consulted an adviser about filling in a tax return for this year (2004/05) send them a copy of the letter you’ve just received. |
