Also known as GSM – the technical standard used for voice communications in Europe.

2.5G

The nickname for GPRS high-speed wireless network services.

3G

High-speed technology allowing data transmission at 114Kbps-1Mbps. Also known as UMTS.

EMS

Enhances Messaging Service – invented by Nokia to allow the transmission of simple multimedia messages in mono.

GPRS

General Packet Radio Service – high-speed wireless network services.

GPS

Global Positioning System – using satellites in orbit around the earth to navigate via trigonometry.

GSM

Current technical standard for voice communications in Europe. A triband phone will allow use on both sides of the Atlantic.

IMEI

A handset’s unique number, which can be barred by if the phone is lost or stolen.

HSCSD

High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data – Technology that turns a 9Kbps connection into one of up to 28.8Kbps. Only available on Orange in the UK. Offers dedicated bandwidth.

MMS

Multimedia Messaging Service – allows pictures, sounds, text and moving images in mobile messages.

SIM

Subscriber Identity Module – Removable card storing the phone number, text message and number memory information for a mobile.

SMS

Short Message Service – otherwise known as text. Limited to 160 characters.

UMTS

The new high-speed 3G mobile phone technology allowing data transmission at rates between 114Kbps and 1 Mbps.

WAP

Wireless Access Protocol – the standard for simple web pages designed to be viewed on mobiles.
